Processing, recognition and acoustic - perceptive analysis of Speech Signals.
Coordinator: dott.ssa Anna Esposito.
The research activity is aimed at the acoustic and perceptive analysis of speech signals in a noisy enviroment and at its automatic recognition with neural techniques. With reference to the vocal signal, activities are carried out to extract acoustic and perceptive features of language phonemes (eg. English and Italian ). The aim is to individuate, by means of measures and statistics, the most robust features compared to the intrinsic variability of the speech signal for applications such as: phonic appraisements, medial diagnosis, automatic recognition, vocal synthesis. With reference to neural networks activities are carried out to identify new algorithms able to learn from noisy signals.
Models and applications of neural networks.
Coordinator: prof. Roberto Tagliaferri.
The activity is aimed at theoretical studies on the learning and dynamics of new models of brain behavior. The application of these models is oriented to significant fields of research, such as enviroment monitoring, industrial and medical diagnosis, movement control and rehabilitation, speech recognition and synthesis, bioinformatics, astrophysics and geological signal recognition.
Artificial Neural Nets Applied to the analysis of nerurosciences, seismic signals and satellite images
Coordinator: prof. Maria Marinaro

Cortical areas play a key role in important functions like those related to the memory. Research's interests includes cortical oscillations, from its structural basis to its functional significance, and neural plasticity.
The goal is understanding processing, transmission and imprinting of information in cortex, studing neurophysiolocial based and abstract neural models of cortical areas.
Furthermore, learning algorithms (on-line and off-line) are studied, and applied to real-world classification problems, like seismic signals discrimination, satellite image classification,.....

Quantum Geometry and Gravitational physics.
Coordinator: prof. Gaetano Scarpetta.
Within a geometric vision of physical reality, the idea wich had guided Einstein to interpret gravitation as a space-time geometry is extended to Quantistic Mechanics. The consequences on black holes are analized, and also their effects on the problem of gravitation quantization, cosmology singularities and the physics of elementary particles (Higgs particles and neutrino oscillations). Another field of investigation is represented by gravitation microlensing as a means to measure the distrubution of baronic dark matter in the universe.
Physics of condensed matter.
Coordinator: prof. Maria Marinaro.
Advanced studies in the field of structure of the matter are developed by using statistical methods and many body theory. Recently, these studies have been addressed to the analysis of High Tc Superconductor Systems. The analysis concerns the thermic and magnetic properties of non conventional superconductive materials such as multilayer and amorphous superconductors.
Multimedia systems for learning and didactics.
Coordinator: dott. Antonio Natale.
Particular studies for multimedial representation of knowledge for learning are carried out by experimenting interactive multimedia technologies. More specifically, the activity is dedicated to the creation of virtual laboratories on cd-rom to study and experiment the didactics of mathematics and physics. Further studies are developed around long distance training with interactive tutorials on the internet to transmit and use non textual informaiton.
